WHAT IS A WEBSITE?
It is a location on a part of the Internet, known as the World Wide Web (the web, www). A website consists of screens (pages) of information.
This information is stored on a computer known as a server. The server delivers the pages to the customer's computer.
Hi-speed servers are too expensive for a small business to own, so companies exist that rent space on their servers. This is known as hosting.
The first screen of a website that is displayed is called the homepage. Customers can move from page to page, within a website, by clicking on areas known as links.
Every website has a unique address (for example www.electricbob.com). When a customer goes to your "address", he sees your homepage.
WHAT IS A WEBSITE ADDRESS?
A website address (known as a URL) is a combination of a "name" and an "extension". The name can be anything that you want if no one else owns it. For example, for our sample site, "electricbob" is the name part of the address. The "extension" for a business is usually "com". but "biz" is also an option. So to create an address for our sample site, we combine "www" with "electricbob" and "era01.com". Periods (dots) are used to separate the parts. This complete address is known as a domain name.
